A Letter From Jail
A portion of a letter written by a young man who is in jail. He is writing to his King’s Courier, letter writing mentor
“Dear James*, this is Matthew Barrow*, the young man that you have been writing to through the youth mentoring program. How have you and your family been doing? I hope all is well. I know it’s been a very long time since I wrote you back. I’ve been having a rough time lately more with myself then anything else really; my mom and family are well which is a blessing. This prison time is not easy, at this time in my life I would truly like to do the things that are positive in the outside world. Like I said I’m having a battle with myself with change. I’m not the same person I was before I came to prison, I’ve grown mature more than I ever have in my life and not just because I’m in prison. Jesus Said "Look After The Orphans"
If you listen to Christian radio, you have heard a great deal about orphans this month. It is hard to get our arms around the fact that there are 143 million children without parents in this world. As a matter of fact, more children became orphans in 2003 than the total number of people living in NY City. Now that is easier to comprehend but no less easy to imagine doing anything about. However, this is not a matter that Christians can sacrifice to the altar of the overwhelmed mind.
Scriptures mention God’s heart for the widows and orphans 60 times. Just one call from our Lord should be enough for us all. I will quote from James 1:27. Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world. He calls us to action and there are many ways we can respond obediently. Many are adopting orphans. This is not easy but obedience rarely is. Many others of us in the body have circumstances in our lives that rule this vital ministry out. However, I want to share how more can answer our Lord’s very clear call. It is called mentoring.
